Lowest Scores in IPL: When the Bowlers Ruled!

The IPL is all about big hits, massive sixes, and thrilling high-scoring matches. But even in this batsman's game, sometimes the bowlers take charge and leave the batters clueless. This article dives into the IPL's record books to find the matches with the Lowest Scores in IPL. We'll see which teams were on the losing side, who were the bowling heroes, and why these batting lineups fell apart so badly.

Lowest Scores in IPL

Royal Challengers Bangalore's Shocking 49 (2017)

The lowest score in IPL history belongs to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Back in 2017, at Kolkata's Eden Gardens, they were bowled out for a measly 49 runs in just over 9 overs! The villains of the story were Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) fast bowlers, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Chris Woakes. Together they took six wickets! Woakes only gave away 17 runs in his four overs and took three wickets, while Coulter-Nile conceded just 12 runs and grabbed another three. The other KKR bowlers chipped in with a wicket each, destroying the RCB batting order.

This match showed a big weakness in RCB's batting, even though they had famous players. Virat Kohli, the captain then, could only manage 5 runs. Big hitters like AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle were also dismissed cheaply. The bowling conditions at Eden Gardens that day helped KKR's pacers. The swing and movement of the ball made it very tough for the RCB batsmen to handle.

Rajasthan Royals' Twice in Trouble (2009 & 2023)

Rajasthan Royals (RR) have the unwanted record of appearing on the list of lowest scores twice! Their first collapse came in the very first IPL season in 2009. Facing RCB in South Africa, they were bundled out for just 58 runs in 15 overs. RCB's bowling attack, led by the legendary Anil Kumble who took five wickets for only 5 runs, proved too good for the young RR batsmen.

Fast forward to 2023, and RR was at the receiving end of another horror show, again against RCB! Chasing a target of 172 runs at their home ground in Jaipur, RR were out for a mere 59 runs in just over 10 overs. This time, it was Mohammed Siraj and Josh Hazlewood who wreaked havoc, taking three wickets each and leaving the RR batting lineup in shambles.

These two collapses show that even the best teams in the IPL can have terrible days. While RR had a young and inexperienced team in 2009, their 2023 batting lineup had famous players like Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson. This just goes to show that even the biggest hitters can struggle sometimes in the IPL.

Other Teams Feeling the Heat

While RCB and RR hold the records for the lowest scores, other teams have also faced the wrath of brilliant bowling attacks. Here's a quick look at some other embarrassingly low scores:

  • Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals): Twice they were dismissed for very low scores - 66 runs against Mumbai Indians (2017) and 67 runs against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) (2017).

  • Pune Warriors India: They were bowled out for just 70 runs against Rajasthan Royals (2013).

These scores highlight the importance of good bowling in the IPL. Even though big scores and sixes get most of the attention, these low-scoring matches remind us that bowlers can also be the heroes and win matches for their teams!
